Why collect vintage portraits?
I was in my favorite little local antique store the other day and came across a basket brimming with old, vintage portraits. I have recently been doing a lot of geaneology research on my families past, so the phots caught my eye. I was surprised to see the photos going for around $6 each! This leads me to believe that there are collectors out there that collect these portraits and I was wondering why? I like them for the peek into days long gone… is that the reason others collect them?
Why collect bottle caps, elephant figurines, baseball cards and such. The person who startsa and maintains a collection doesn’t have to ask himself “why?” If a person has an interest in these items, that is all the reason he or she needs to start collecting.
You can look at all your snapshot photos and think about the twenty cents or so that you paid for most of them. It can make you wonder what makes those photos in the antique store worth six dollars. You see, if a person just wants an image, now days he can just do an image search online and find, virtually, any kind of vintage photo going back to the earliest part of the nineteenth century. But, to a collector, being able to actually hold and posess a print that was made about the same time the photo was taken is a very different experience. Part of this experience lies with the rarity of the actual photo print. For most of those in the basket, they are probably the ONLY such print in existance.
Imagine that. That shot of the lady in the funny bathing suit holding a beachball is probably long dead. The beach she stood on is probably still there, but the period in history in which the photo was taken is irretrievably gone. One might stage a reenactment, but that actual moment of time captured on that old print will NEVER recur. That’s what makes the print worth it to one who collects such things.
